EU agrees to expand sanctions on Iran
EU foreign ministers have agreed to expand sanctions on Iran’s drone and missile production. The sanctions, which previously targeted exports to Russia, will now also aim to prevent the spread of drones to groups like Hezbollah in Lebanon. According to EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell, the measures strive to curb Iran’s disruptive behavior in the region, emphasizing the importance of regional stability. Danish Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen noted Iran’s proxy wars and recent direct attacks on Israel as reasons for the tightened sanctions, especially considering the steps towards normalization between other countries in the Middle East and Israel. The sanctions follow Iran’s attack on Israel with drones and missiles, raising fears of triggering war. However, the sanctions will not be effective immediately, as technical details must be ironed out to ensure they target the intended areas of Iran’s production and export capabilities.
