Mette Frederiksen: U.S. interest in Greenland complex, long-term

Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen describes the ongoing U.S. interest in Greenland as ‘a difficult situation’ that may persist over time, ahead of U.S. Vice President J.D. Vance’s visit to the U.S. military base Pituffik in Greenland. Frederiksen also highlights that President Trump’s interest in Greenland might not fade away, citing his recent statement about the necessity for Greenland to become part of the U.S. for international security reasons. Frederiksen calls the pressure of a planned visit by U.S. officials, including Usha Vance, to Greenland ‘unacceptable,’ although the visit has since been limited to the U.S. military base. The Danish Prime Minister states that any statements from Denmark do not fundamentally change the situation and emphasizes the need for polite but firm diplomacy, while extending respect to the resilience shown by the Greenlandic people amid overwhelming attention and pressure.
