Supreme Court: Last Danish child to be evacuated from Syria

The Supreme Court of Denmark has ruled that a Danish boy, age eight, and his mother must be evacuated from Syria’s al-Roj camp, where he’s been detained since 2019. This decision overturns earlier rulings by lower courts, which denied assistance to the mother, a non-Danish citizen who lost her Danish citizenship in 2020. The court deemed failing to evacuate the boy with his mother a human rights violation. Health professionals visiting the camp urged for the boy’s immediate evacuation due to worsening health conditions, including respiratory issues and symptoms of anxiety and depression. The organization Repatriate the Children – Denmark advocated for their return. With this final Danish child’s evacuation, all Danish children will have been removed from Syrian detainment camps.
