US seeks more Danish eggs amid bird flu outbreak
After a bird flu outbreak resulted in the culling of over 50 million hens in the US, leading to a surge in egg prices, American authorities reached out to the Danish Egg Association, Danske Æg, to discuss increasing egg exports from Denmark. The high prices have made eggs a political issue, addressed by President Donald Trump. Challenges for exporting to the US include different regulations, such as the requirement for eggs to be washed, which is not allowed in the EU. Ivan Noes of Dava Foods sees potential in the American market if export barriers can be relaxed. The Danish Food Minister Jacob Jensen acknowledges the importance of trade relations and that quality Danish products are in demand globally. Wholesale egg prices in the US have risen sharply, with a 59 percent increase on a yearly basis.
