Whale-Tracking tech to monitor sea floor
Researchers are seeking to improve monitoring of undersea cables and pipes, critical infrastructure susceptible to damage or sabotage. Simon Pedersen of Aalborg University’s Energy Institute is leading a project to apply existing technology to secure the sea bed. Reports of damaged internet and power cables have highlighted the significance of this task. The team, including experts from DTU, SDU, Aarhus University, Danish Hydraulic Institute, and Force Technology, started their work in January. By repurposing technologies like underwater listening stations originally used for tracking whales, they aim to detect unusual sounds that may indicate threats. Additionally, sensors placed within cables could signal for maintenance or repair needs. The feasibility and sufficiency of these measures are for politicians to decide, framed by available funding. The project is financially supported by the National Defense Technological Center.
