Royal visit to Faroe Islands postponed due to strike

The Danish royal couple’s official visit to the Faroe Islands next week has been postponed indefinitely due to an extensive week-long strike. Faroese Premier Aksel V. Johannesen has decided it is not ‘appropriate to hold the visit under the current circumstances.’ This situation has been acknowledged by the palace, with a statement expressing the royal couple’s ‘full understanding’ and looking forward to rescheduling the program. The strike, which began in mid-May, has disrupted public services and has involved various labor groups including garbagemen, truck drivers, dock workers, and others demanding a new collective bargaining agreement. The ongoing strike has caused shortages in supermarkets, closed institutions, and gasoline scarcity. According to Jyllands-Posten it represents about 10 percent of the population, with around 5000 workers involved and has halted all public transport except for emergency services.
