Leaders commemorate Constitution in rain

On Constitution Day, Danish leaders celebrated the 175th anniversary of Denmark’s Grundloven, even as rain fell. Leaders praised the enduring Constitution and democracy, with Lars Løkke Rasmussen (M) describing it as ‘robust with patina’ and adaptable to modern society. Inger Støjberg from Danmarksdemokraterne highlighted its strength amidst current global challenges to freedom. Politicians started the day with a service at Holmens Kirke and continued at Christiansborg with the royal family. Emphasizing the Constitution’s role in enabling political discourse and cooperation, Pia Olsen Dyhr of SF, and Støjberg presented a united front despite differing views. Troels Lund Poulsen of Venstre noted the contrast between Denmark’s strong democracy and struggles for similar rights nearby, an allusion to Ukraine. Various leaders gave Constitution Day speeches across the country.
