Denmark proposes additional DKK 17 million for royals

The Danish government has proposed an increase in funding for the royal family, raising the annual budget from 126.5 to 143.8 million kroner, an increase of 17.3 million kroner, following the January succession of the throne. The Prime Minister’s Office stated that the move aims to future-proof the monarchy’s finances. An additional 29 million kroner has been allocated this year to maintain proper capital levels for upcoming investments and expenses related to the transition. Queen Margrethe, who abdicated on January 14, will receive 12 million kroner, while Crown Prince Christian is earmarked 4 million kroner for when he establishes his own household. The government also plans to take over interior maintenance of royal castles and palaces due to their national heritage status. Three bills concerning royal financing will be discussed in Parliament, with the first reading scheduled for April 19 and potential backdating effect from February 1.
