On Tuesday evening Danish time, a group of armed and hooded people seized a television station in Ecuador. Viewers have been able to follow the events on live television, where both gunshots and shouts have been heard. TC employees are said to have been ordered to lie down on the floor, according to Reuters and AFP. The situation is taking place at a time when a state of emergency has been declared in Ecuador following the escape of drug lord José Adolfo Macías from one of the country’s prisons. On Tuesday evening, there were also reports that at least seven police officers had been abducted, Reuters reported. Ecuadorian President Daniel Noboa announced overnight Tuesday that soldiers will be deployed on the country’s streets and prisons for an initial 60 days as a result of José Adolfo Macía’s escape. /ritzau/
