Scholz and Frederiksen urge for EU arms to Ukraine
Danish prime minister Mette Frederiksen and German chancellor Olaf Scholz emphasize in an open letter the ‘overwhelming’ need for ammunition and quick arms deliveries to Ukraine. Other EU leaders from the Czech Republic, Estonia, and the Netherlands join the call for collective long-term armament of Ukraine. The EU’s goal to provide one million artillery shells by March has not been met. The letter addresses the wavering support for Ukraine within the EU, noting Slovakia’s halt of military aid and Hungary’s resistance. It recognizes a similar rise in opposition within the US, potentially escalating if Trump becomes president again. They insist on accelerated delivery of promised artillery to Ukraine, suggesting EU countries could donate from existing stocks or make joint purchases.
