Over 20% increasingly avoid news

More than one in five people in Denmark now avoid news occasionally or frequently, a five percent increase from last year, according to a report by the Center for News Research at Roskilde University. Professor Kim Schrøder explains this uptick as a response to feeling overwhelmed by the sheer volume of news available 24/7 rather than dissatisfaction with the content. Over one-third find the amount of news overwhelming, a significant rise from 2019. Major conflicts like Ukraine and Gaza, along with climate and sports news, are particularly avoided. Addressing the issue of news fatigue is difficult as it’s a systemic problem within the media industry. Despite this, trust in Danish news remains high, with 57 percent expressing confidence in national news media. The report by Roskilde University, involving 2000 participants, forms part of an international study by the Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism at the University of Oxford.
