Egyptian PM & Danish Mærsk discuss Red Sea security
Egypt’s Prime Minister, Mostafa Madbouly, has had a video meeting with representatives from Maersk to discuss developments in the Red Sea, according to Reuters. The meeting also discussed ways of strengthening cooperation, according to a statement from the Egyptian cabinet on Wednesday. Madbouly stresses that security, including maritime safety, in the Red Sea is central to Egypt’s national security. The Suez Canal passes through Egypt, which is one of the reasons why the Red Sea is important to the country’s revenues. Due to Houthi attacks – including drones and missiles – against ships in the Red Sea including a Maersk ship, the shipping giant has decided to send all of its ships south of Africa.
The White House said on Wednesday that Houthi attacks in the Red Sea were increasing and that the U.S. would consult with its partners on the next steps if the attacks continued, Reuters reported. “These attacks are illegal and escalating,” National Security Council Spokesman John Kirby said. /ritzau/
