Twelve people died after panic erupted at a stadium in El Salvador, according to police in the country’s capital, San Salvador. Earlier on Sunday, the death toll stood at nine people. But a local police chief told reporters three more had died in different hospitals. Police said earlier that several people were injured, including at least two in critical condition. According to Carlos Fuentes, spokesperson for the emergency unit Comandos de Salvamento, more than 500 people received treatment. About 100 people in serious condition were taken to hospital, he said. Preliminary information suggests that the fans were squashed when they tried to enter the stadium, located in San Salvador, to watch a football match between the teams Alianza and FAS. /ritzau/AFP/
