EU countries are working to impose sanctions following the military coup in Niger, according to EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell. The announcement follows a meeting of EU defence ministers on Wednesday in Toledo, Spain, where there was support for the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS). “It is up to them to make decisions that can counter this military coup. We will try to implement the sanctions that they have decided,” Borrell said. He thus suggests that there must be “African solutions to African problems”. “We are moving forward on a sanctions regime against the coup plotters, and tomorrow the foreign ministers will move forward with that,” Borrell said. /ritzau/
