With a new EU directive, consumers are to be protected from misleading claims about climate-friendly products and greenwashing. Christel Schaldemose says that the legislation is very concrete. “We simply prohibit companies from claiming that their machines and products can do a whole lot of things if they can’t. If you claim, for example, that it is climate-neutral or CO2-neutral, then it must be documentable,” she says.
The European Parliament ruled on Wednesday that generic climate claims and other misleading marketing ploys should be banned. The Red Green’s MEP, Nikolaj Villumsen, is also satisfied with the directive. “Basically, we need climate action, not lies and Latin” he says.
