EU-Energy
The EU Council of Ministers has decided to extend three emergency regulations which, among other things, are intended to protect EU citizens from unnecessarily high energy prices, the council said in a press release on Tuesday. The extension of the three emergency regulations is necessary to address a still fragile situation in the EU following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. “It will stabilise energy markets and protect citizens from excessive energy prices,” said Teresa Ribera, Spain’s minister for green transition. In addition to keeping prices in check, one of the regulations aims to strengthen solidarity between states. This will be achieved through improved coordination of gas purchases and cross-border gas exchanges. It has been extended for one year, until 31 December 2024. In addition, another regulation aims to accelerate the expansion of renewable energy in order not to be dependent on Russian fossil fuels and to achieve the EU’s climate goals. /ritzau/
