EU/Ukraine

The strongest security commitment the EU can give to Ukraine is EU membership, EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell said Monday in Kyiv, which was the venue of a Council of Ministers meeting. “Ukraine remains a candidate country, but it is well on its way,” he said. The meeting of the Council of Ministers was also called historic, as it is the first time that such a meeting has taken place outside the EU. Ukraine obtained candidate status last year, even though it was already one of Europe’s poorest and characterised by widespread corruption before the war. However, Ukraine has implemented a number of reforms during the war that its government hopes will convince EU countries to open accession negotiations with Ukraine.
According to Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen, who participated in the meeting, Ukraine will become a member of the EU. It is only a question of when. “We have no doubt that Ukraine will become a member of the European Union. It’s just too early to say exactly when,” he said.  /ritzau/
