Four in ten gig workers face harassment
Over 40% of young gig workers have faced harassing actions over the past year, according to research from Aalborg University, Roskilde University, and The National Research Center for the Working Environment. These workers often deal with unwanted sexual attention, disputes, harassment, and discrimination. While responses were low – only 7.4% were usable out of 5876 surveys sent – there’s a clear workplace issue in this app-based employment sector. Gig workers lack the workplace support typically available, facing hazards and incidents alone, a factor contributing to negative impacts on health and well-being. Nearly 40% reported workplace accidents, notably above the 8% average for other industries. In March 2024, the EU adopted a directive aimed at improving conditions and rights for gig workers across the EU.
