Warnings against hiring nurses from non-EU countries

Researchers from the University of Copenhagen’s Department of Global Health are warning that Denmark’s recruitment of nurses from countries like India and the Philippines could lead to increased illness and death in those countries. The Danish government’s plan, presented in January, aims to explore options for hiring nurses and social and healthcare assistants from these countries. Researchers argue that this could deplete the already scarce nursing resources in India and the Philippines. Although Danish Education and Research Minister Christina Egelund noted India’s strategies to expand education and does not see recruitment as an issue, researcher Nanna Maaløe expresses ethical concerns over high-income countries using global resources in this way, highlighting the vulnerability of the health systems in the source countries.
