Denmark boosts museum funding
Denmark’s museums will see a yearly funding increase by 75 million DKK with a new political deal, leading to total annual subsidies of 565.7 million DKK from 2025. Culture Minister Jakob Engel-Schmidt announced the agreement, introducing a system that categorizes museums by the significance of their collections for grant determination. A new board will handle this classification and the recognition of museums, which must earn at least 4 million DKK annually (3 million on smaller islands) and have a minimum of 10,000 yearly visitors (8,000 for smaller islands) for state acknowledgment. Additionally, museums can earn incentive-based grants for performance in revenue, visitors, and research. The deal also facilitates new museums in achieving state recognition. Engel-Schmidt described it as one of the most significant recent enhancements to museum funding.
