Ex-Danes can reopen citizenship cases

Former Danish citizens who lost their citizenship from 1993 to 2015 due to acquiring citizenship of another country can have their cases reopened, the Danish Ministry of Immigration and Integration announced. This decision follows the evaluation of EU Court of Justice cases on lost citizenship, revealing that Denmark has not proportionately considered the loss of EU citizenship introduced in 1993. Affected individuals are entitled to an individual assessment; successful cases could restore Danish citizenship. The opportunity to reopen cases applies when citizenship loss affected EU rights, often involving family or employment ties within the EU. Danish authorities will not review cases proactively due to lack of a registry. They will advertise digitally and through foreign representations, and authorities must notify individuals and provide a reasonable deadline for requesting case reviews, as determined by the EU Court of Justice.
