Ex-Danish citizens may reclaim status
The Danish Ministry of Immigration and Integration announced that former Danish citizens who lost their nationality from 1993 to 2015 due to acquiring another citizenship can have their cases reopened. Based on EU Court rulings, Denmark may have failed to consider proportionality in the loss of EU citizenship when revoking Danish nationality. Affected individuals are entitled to an individual assessment, potentially leading to the reinstatement of Danish citizenship. Although this spans over two decades, there may only be a few cases. Exact numbers are unknown. Reopening cases require EU law implications, typically involving family or work ties to another EU state at the time of loss. Danish authorities must inform these individuals, who will be given a reasonable deadline to request case reviews, per an EU Court decision on September 5, 2023.
