Guidance counselors lack time for grieving students

A survey conducted by the Danish Cancer Society and Epinion shows that 75% of 178 guidance counselors feel underprepared to support grieving students. The surveyed counselors express the need for a competency course to better understand and assist students with their challenges. The study highlights time constraints as a primary hurdle, with 70% of respondents citing lack of time as a barrier to providing support. Furthermore, 55% believe they lack the necessary skills. The Danish Cancer Society plans to release a manual for high schools to create a grief action plan and initiate an emergency response, and they aim to introduce a bereavement support course for counselors by 2025. The survey covers counselors from general high schools with an STX-line across all five Danish regions.
