Tech stress plagues healthcare workers

Poorly functioning IT systems are causing ‘technostress’ among healthcare staff, according to the chair of the Danish Nurses’ Organization (DSR), Dorthe Boe Danbjørg. A new study from Roskilde University addresses the stress caused by difficulties working with or adapting to new technology. Professor Morten Hertzum suggests the main challenges arise from slow or ineffective systems and insufficient training for the expected technology. Dorthe Boe Danbjørg recognizes these issues, citing nurses’ documentation systems as an example of technology intended to reduce workload but not aligning with actual work practices, leading to double documentation. The solution, according to Danbjørg, involves involving healthcare professionals in the development of technology for better results. The Danish Nurses’ Organization has proposed ten recommendations for technology advancements to enhance nursing care.
