Heunicke’s forest project to revive Vejle Fjord by 2027

Magnus Heunicke, the Danish Minister of the Environment, plans to significantly improve the water environment of 20 fjords, including Randers Fjord, Vejle Fjord, and Faaborg Fjord, by 2027. Measures will include purchasing land, planting forests, extracting peat soils, and creating wetlands to achieve ‘good ecological condition.’ Heunicke acknowledges widespread oxygen depletion and the disappearance of life in Danish waters, with 95% in poor condition. In June, a green three-party agreement established a 40 billion DKK land fund for such initiatives. Nonetheless, reaching the EU goal for all fjords by 2027 is deemed unrealistic. Jørgen E. Olesen, a professor, views the timeline as improbable, suggesting a decade or longer is needed for recovery. He criticizes temporary political motivations conflicting with long-term efforts. Heunicke remains optimistic, citing political will and financial resources.
