Denmark may cancel defense deal if US takes Greenland

President Donald Trump has expressed a desire to acquire Greenland and has not ruled out using force. In response, Denmark could terminate a defense agreement that allows U.S. troops and equipment access to the country if the U.S. attempts to annex Greenland. Lars Løkke Rasmussen stated that any form of U.S. annexation of Greenland would justify ending the agreement. This agreement, made in December 2023, grants the U.S. military access to Danish airbases. Despite the potential threat from Trump’s ambitions and reported American espionage intentions, a political majority in Denmark supports the agreement. Critics argue that it grants excessive powers to U.S. soldiers in Denmark. EU foreign affairs chief Kaja Kallas commented that allies should not spy on each other, referencing allegations of American espionage against Denmark and Greenland.
