Denmark Joins UN Security Council
Denmark has been elected as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council for 2025 and 2026, alongside Somalia, Pakistan, Panama, and Greece. Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen highlighted the importance of this event for Danish foreign policy, achieved after years of diplomatic efforts. The nation aims to promote dialogue and unity in the Council amidst challenging relations between the major powers. The non-permanent members, including Denmark, are taking on greater responsibilities, exemplified by a recent resolution on a ceasefire in Gaza, he says. Rasmussen emphasized the significance of Denmark’s influence in the Council, despite its non-permanent status. This marks Denmark’s fifth session in the Security Council, twenty years after its last term. According to TV 2 Denmark secured the most votes, totaling 184, for its candidacy.
