Minister criticizes cryolite documentary’s clarity

Danish Culture Minister Jakob Engel-Schmidt criticized a new DR documentary for not clearly distinguishing between revenue and profit, implying Denmark earned up to 400 billion kroner from a Greenlandic cryolite mine. The documentary has been labeled misleading by economic experts like former economic leader Hans Jørgen Whitta-Jacobsen. Economist Torben Andersen called it problematic despite participating in it. Greenland’s Prime Minister Múte B. Egede maintains Denmark ‘earned’ the amount from the Ivittuut mine, but DR acknowledges the figure’s uncertainty, considering conflicting expert views, Denmark’s investments in Greenland, and its ownership history. The debated figure is impacting the Greenlandic election, with Egede considering this as vital for relations with Denmark and discussing future economic independence without Danish subsidies.
