US and allies propose 21-day ceasefire in Lebanon
The USA, France, and other countries have advocated for a 21-day truce between Israel and Lebanon to foster negotiations, following an escalation in hostilities with Hezbollah. The coalition calling for the ceasefire includes Australia, Canada, EU member states, Germany, Italy, Japan, Saudi Arabia, the UAE, and Qatar. This plea came after discussions between French President Macron and US President Biden, as well as an emergency UN Security Council meeting led by France. Meanwhile, Israel expressed willingness for diplomacy to prevent a full-scale war but is prepared to take all necessary actions if required. Confrontations intensified after the explosion of Hezbollah pagers on September 17. Recent exchanges resulted in at least 72 deaths and nearly 400 injuries in Lebanon, as well as a failed Hezbollah missile attack towards Mossad near Tel Aviv, which Israeli defense intercepted.
