Bid to revive munitions production in Denmark
A selection process to restart the production of gunpowder and bullets in Elling, North Jutland is officially underway, with three pre-qualified companies—Danammo, Nammo, and AMA Group—having formally commenced their competition. The head of the Danish Defence Ministry’s Materiel and Procurement Agency, Per Pugholm Olsen, emphasized the need for a manufacturer with knowledge of Danish industry. While acknowledging the candidates’ competencies, he stressed the importance of interaction with the local industry. Danammo and Nammo have proposed producing heavy artillery and small arms ammunition, while AMA Group seeks to produce small caliber ammo. The Elling site previously stopped production in 2020 due to losses faced by the Spanish owner. The Danish government has since taken over, keen to restore domestic ammunition production. The area, now opened to the press, shows signs of its past and considerations are being made whether to reuse or modernize the old building infrastructure.
