Goal to reduce dementia medication stagnates
Despite a political goal to reduce by half the use of antipsychotic medication in individuals with dementia by 2025, there has been no progress in seven years, with 16% of dementia patients still receiving such treatment. The use of this medication has been criticized for serious side effects including increased risk of blood clots and death. The National Knowledge Center for Dementia’s leader, Gunhild Waldemar, expresses deep concern over the lack of the action plan’s impact. Approximately 96,000 people in Denmark over 65 years old are estimated to have dementia, a number expected to grow. Health Minister Sophie Løhde acknowledges the issue and emphasizes the need for continued focus, mentioning new initiatives and enhanced monitoring funded to help reduce the medication usage.
