Today’s news / Dankort no longer accepted in some public services
The number of payments made with Dankort (Danish debit card) is sharply decreasing. This is due among other things to digital solutions where consumers use the mobile phone as a payment method. (Archive photo). Photo: Mads Claus Rasmussen/Ritzau Scanpix

Dankort no longer accepted in some public services

The Dankort payment card is being eliminated as a payment option in various public services, reports Politiken.dk. Copenhagen’s school meal program accepts only Visa or Mastercard due to higher costs associated with Dankort. Similarly, TV 2 has discontinued Dankort for TV 2 Play subscriptions since 2021. The card’s usage has declined from nearly 70% of card payments in 2019 to below 50% in 2023, influenced by the rise in mobile payments using international cards. Only Danske Bank supports Dankort on Apple Pay, while no banks offer it on Google Pay. Henrik Sedenmark from Dansk Erhverv laments the trend, noting the higher costs for businesses due to increased expenses and international card processing fees.
