Cleanup bill for Nordic Waste may reach 500M DKK
Nearly a year after a landslide at Nordic Waste in Ølst near Randers, the cleanup bill is estimated at 500 million Danish kroner, with the state contributing 200 million kroner, leaving Randers Municipality with approximately 300 million kroner to pay. Municipal Director Jesper Kaas Schmidt emphasized the heavy financial burden but noted the costs are less than feared, such as the rerouting of Alling Å, which was threatened. Alling Å has now been restored close to its natural course, preventing pollution due to the landslide. The next goal is to reopen Gammel Århusvej, buried during the event, by the first quarter of next year. The municipal council is considering a government-guaranteed loan of up to 375 million kroner. Meanwhile, Randers Municipality has filed financial claims against Nordic Waste, which declared bankruptcy post-landslide, and DSH Recycling, which owns the land and has countered with a lawsuit. Legal responsibility and oversight issues are still under investigation.
