Ministry of Climate: Denmark Nearly Meets 2030 Climate Goal

Denmark might achieve its 2030 climate target of a 70% emissions reduction, with new projections by The Ministry of Climate showing a 68% reduction from 1990 levels. The increase from last year’s prediction of 63.1% is driven by politicized strategies such as CO2 taxation and car tax reform, alongside more optimistic estimates of lower emissions from peatlands and increased carbon uptake by forests, contributing a combined 3.4 million ton reduction. Surprisingly high electric vehicle sales also contribute 0.8 million tons of CO2 reduction. While improvements are notable, uncertainties linger in the models and the efficacy of technologies like CO2 capture. Agriculture remains a key area for potential reductions, and ongoing negotiations aim to introduce a greenhouse gas tax to propel its transformation.
