Denmark bolsters srctic presence with ships
Denmark’s Defense Minister Troels Lund Poulsen announced a new Arctic defense agreement to strengthen the country’s presence in the Arctic and North Atlantic. The agreement allocates approximately 14.6 billion kroner for military capabilities, including the procurement of three new Arctic ships and additional long-range drones for surveillance, as well as the enhancement of satellite capacity. Greenland’s Foreign Affairs Minister, Vivian Motzfeldt, emphasized the importance of the new ships for the security of individual Greenlanders. The agreement comes in the context of comments by US President Donald Trump on Greenland and the presence of Russian and Chinese ships in the region. It also follows an earlier 2021 Arctic agreement where parts remain unrealized, highlighting past inadequacies in addressing Arctic and North Atlantic security issues.
