Danish defense ends Baghdad chapter
Approximately 105 combat engineers from the Engineer Regiment are returning to Denmark from Baghdad, marking a provisional end to the Danish Defense’s contribution to the security aspect of their presence in Iraq. During their several months in the Iraqi capital, the engineers experienced a peaceful mission, encountering friendly faces in Baghdad, which major Erik Dalsgaard attributes to their polite and patient demeanor. Since 2018, Danish soldiers have been instrumental in securing and escorting advisors aiding Iraq’s government with security. However, this escort and security part of the NATO Mission Iraq will now be handed over to Dutch soldiers. Denmark remains involved with about 15 staff and advisory personnel in support roles, focusing on long-term counter-terrorism efforts, including advising Iraqi security institutions. These engineers, known for working in armored vehicles, specialize in constructing bridges, repairing roads, and demining, assisting soldiers in movement.
