Danish man’s Russian war contract annulled

A 33-year-old Danish man serving in the Russian military in the war against Ukraine has had his contract annulled as determined by a military court in Moscow. His lawyer, Roman Petrov, informed that the decision overturned a previous ruling, allowing the Dane to leave his unit in the Luhansk region within days. The man sued the Russian Defense Ministry, claiming he was misled into fighting for Russia after signing a one-year contract, in Russian, a language he does not understand. He had moved to Russia in summer 2023, appreciating its development and values over those in Europe, and when his visa expired in October, he attempted to extend it. Initially seeking to become a border guard or learn Russian to become a translator, he did not intend to be sent to war. His case was initially dismissed by a Russian military court but succeeded on appeal.
