Denmark greenlights enhanced penalty zones for anti-Semitism

Denmark is introducing enhanced penalty zones for hate crimes, such as anti-Semitic acts, as one of 12 new measures to protect Jews and combat anti-Semitism. Announced by Justice Minister Peter Hummelgaard, the agreement is supported by all parties in the Folketing. Hummelgaard cited an ‘epidemic of anti-Semitism’ across Europe. The plan also includes educational initiatives to teach young people about Jewish culture and history. Education Minister Mattias Tesfaye highlighted the importance of visiting concentration camps to understand the history of the Holocaust. Additionally, the government is allocating ten million Danish kroner for research into ‘new anti-Semitism’ and the development of educational materials. The measures come in response to an increase in anti-Semitic incidents reported by police and the Jewish community, with 187 reports and 42 charges related to Judaism since October 7.
