Denmark condemns Israeli ban on UN agency
Denmark’s Foreign Minister, Lars Løkke Rasmussen, criticizes Israel’s Knesset for passing a law that prohibits UNRWA from operating in Israel. He states that Denmark condemns the decision, as UNRWA is crucial for humanitarian aid. Israel is urged to allow unhindered humanitarian aid and respect international law. The organization provides essential assistance, shelter, healthcare, and education, particularly vital in Gaza and the West Bank. The ban has been called ‘scandalous’ by UNRWA’s spokesperson and a ‘disaster’ by Amnesty International’s Denmark secretary-general, with fears it could set Gaza back 70 years due to poverty, hunger, and infrastructure destruction. Israel accuses UNRWA of connections to terrorist activities, alleging that some employees were involved in a recent attack by Hamas.
