Finland will close all but one border crossing with Russia in Lapland, Finnish Prime Minister Petteri Orpo said at a press conference on Wednesday. He added that Finland would monitor the situation and take further steps if necessary. Today, there are four open border crossings between Finland and Russia. But from midnight on Friday, three of them will close, Orpo said. The reason is an increase in the number of asylum seekers arriving at the Finnish border. So far in November, more than 600 asylum seekers have arrived in Finland via Russia. On Wednesday alone, 62 new arrivals were recorded at two of Finland’s eastern border crossings. The asylum seekers come from Syria, Afghanistan, Yemen, Kenya, Morocco, Somalia and Pakistan, among others, immigration authorities in Finland said. /ritzau/
