Hundreds of thousands of protesters took to the streets again in several parts of Germany on Sunday to show their opposition to the German right-wing Alternative for Germany (AfD) party. In Munich, the influx was so large that the organizers of the demonstration were forced to abandon their plans for a march through the city. For safety, they instead had to ask the participants in the protest to leave. According to the organizers, 50,000 people had turned up for the demonstration. That’s about double what they had anticipated. Earlier, it was said from the rostrum that 200 000 people had come to the demonstration in Munich. Police in the city estimate that about 100,000 people had turned up. Many carried signs reading “Out with Nazis” and “Never Again”. Sunday’s large demonstrations come after at least a quarter of a million people gathered for protests in several cities around Germany on Saturday. Protests have grown since it emerged earlier this month that members of the AfD have discussed plans for mass deportations of millions of people with immigrant backgrounds. /ritzau/AFP
