Govt. gives to the Amazon Fund

In the upcoming budget proposal, the government wishes to allocate DKK 150 million to the Amazon Fund, which works to reduce deforestation in the Amazon forest in South America, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in a press release. According to Minister for Development Cooperation and Global Climate Policy Dan Jorgensen, halting deforestation in the Amazon is one of “the most important tasks on the planet”. “Denmark, as a green pioneer country, should also contribute here. In doing so, we contribute to combating climate change, preserving biodiversity and supporting the rights of indigenous peoples,” he said in a press release. The Prime Minister’s Office already announced in July that the government would allocate money for the purpose in connection with Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen meeting Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva in Brussels. /ritzau/
