The EU has sent 11 planes and a helicopter to the Dadia National Park in Greece, EU spokesperson Balazs Ujvari told AFP. The national park is located in the east of the country towards Turkey. The planes, along with some 400 firefighters, will help battle the forest fire in the area, which according to Greece’s fire brigade “remains out of control”. The EU would like a combined effort of 28 aircraft – 24 aircraft and four helicopters – to be made available by member states to deal with the situation. “We know that the fires are getting worse,” Balazs Ujvari told AFP. According to a spokesperson from the European Commission, the fire is described as the largest in EU history. /ritzau/
