Hamas takes responsibility for Jerusalem attack

Hamas has claimed responsibility for a shooting Thursday in Jerusalem in which three were killed, Hamas said in a statement on Thursday, according to AFP. Two Palestinians opened fire at a bus stop on the outskirts of Jerusalem, killing at least three and wounding at least eight, Israeli police said according to Reuters. According to the police, the two alleged perpetrators were killed at the scene. “This operation is a natural response to the unprecedented crimes of the occupying forces in the Gaza Strip and against children in Jenin,” the Hamas statement said and called for an “escalation of resistance”. The announcement came as Israel and Hamas had extended a ceasefire that was due to expire at 6 a.m. Thursday by a seventh day. Israel’s national security minister, Itamar Ben-Gvir, has visited the area where the shooting took place. “This event shows once again that we must not show weakness,” Ben-Gvir said adding: “We can only talk to Hamas through the telescopic sights of our rifles. Through war.” /ritzau/
