At least 53 people have lost their lives in wildfires ravaging the Hawaiian island of Maui, according to the local authorities in a statement, according to Reuters. Maui County said on Facebook that there are three active fires going on. Most of the historic city of Lahaina, located on western Maui, has been engulfed in flames. According to firefighters, there has been extensive destruction to the city, its port and surrounding areas. There has also been great destruction in many residential areas on the western side of the island, which are now almost completely cut off with only one highway open. /ritzau/Reuters/
