Iceland
Between midnight and six o’clock on Sunday morning, 880 earthquakes were recorded on the Reykjanes peninsula in Iceland, according to the Icelandic media RÚV. All earthquakes during the night were measured below magnitude three on the Richter scale. It has thus been quieter in the earthquake areas than the past two nights. The main activity is just northeast of the Icelandic town of Grindavík. The magma, which runs in a 15-kilometer fissure beneath Grindavík, is thought to be closer than 800 metres to the Earth’s surface. The Icelandic town on the south coast was evacuated on Saturday after several earthquakes hit the Reykjanes Peninsula repeatedly during Friday. /ritzau/
