Iceland PM on strike

Tens of thousands of women and nonbinary people will strike today in Iceland to highlight violence against women and gender inequality, according to The Guardian Monday. Among the confirmed participants are Prime Minister Katrín Jakobsdóttir, as well as women fishermen, teachers and nurses. Although Iceland topped the World Economic Forum’s gender equality survey for the 14th time in a row in 2023, there is also inequality in Icelandic society. In some professions, Icelandic women earn more than 20 percent less than their male counterparts, the Guardian says. Four out of ten women have also experienced gender-based or sexual violence. /ritzau/
