Japan’s government on Tuesday issued a warning to residents in the south of the country after North Korea apparently fired a missile. The warning to seek safety applied to residents of the Okinawa region. “The launch of a ballistic missile in a way where it passes through the airspace over Japan is an act that could potentially have a serious effect on the lives and property of the Japanese people,” Prime Minister Fumio Kishida’s office wrote on X. At 22:55 local time Japan’s government again lifted that notice, that had been sent out to the residents of the Okinawa region.
The government added that a missile appeared to have flown from North Korea past Japan and on towards the Pacific Ocean. Japan condemned North Korea “in the strongest terms”, writes AFP. In South Korea, the military remained on high alert late Tuesday night local time, it said. The South Korean military, which monitors activity in its northern neighbour, said it could be a spy satellite. /ritzau/
