The Mexican coastal city of Acapulco continues to struggle to recover from the very powerful hurricane Otis. The death toll rose to 48 on Sunday local time after the hurricane, which led to widespread power cuts and criticism of the government’s response. “We are fighting for ourselves,” says Margarita Carmona, who is chopping fallen trees in the area of Puerto Margués. Like many others in the coastal and tourist town of about 780,000 inhabitants, she has grown tired of waiting for help from the authorities. It was not provided until Saturday – days after Otis made a violent landfall and left local landmarks completely destroyed. /ritzau/AFP
