North Korea said on Friday it had tested an underwater nuclear weapon. According to Pyongyang the test is in response to joint exercises conducted by the United States, South Korea and Japan, which involved a U.S. nuclear-powered aircraft carrier. The joint exercises posed “a serious threat to the security” of North Korea, which retaliated by “conducting an important test of the Haeil-5-23 underwater nuclear weapons system, which is under development in the Sea of Japan in Korea,” North Korea’s defence ministry said in a statement, according to the state news agency KCNA. In the past, North Korea has said it has been conducting several tests of an underwater nuclear attack drone – another variant of the Haeil system.
